The study aims to explore the use of language through the transitivity theory, which is the core of Halliday's (1969) Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) that focuses on language functions. To analyze the function, the study focuses on the transitivity processes present in the artist's first debut single, "Seven", and the latest release, "Standing Next to You". The study results show that both songs have dominant material processes for 66 occurrences, which accounts for about 45.8% of the total 144 processes. Although both songs predominantly use the same processes, they differ in the second most commonly used processes. "Seven" emphasizes the thoughts, feelings, or perceptions (mental processes) that arise after experiencing love (material processes). In contrast, "Standing Next to You" emphasizes the verbal communication that follows the act of showing love. Based on this study, it is recommended to conduct further analysis of the participants involved in the process and the circumstances for future research.
Friska Dita Copyright (c) 2024 BLESS https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8570 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 The Correlation Between Learning Interest And Reading Comprehension Achievements? https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8543
This research aimed at figuring out the significant correlation between learning interest and reading comprehension achievement of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 6 Sungai Lilin. This research encompassed 36 students as population and also sample since total sampling techniques was applied. The researchers used an experimental research method in term of a correlational design. Test and questionnaire were applied to obtain the data. To analyze the data, the researchers used Pearson Product Moment Correlation through SPSS 25.0. The results showed that there was a significant and strong correlation, with the value of correlation coefficient (r-obtained) of 0,768 was higher than the value of correlation coefficient of the Product Moment table (rt) of 0,320 which indicated that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, learning interest has an important role in increasing students’ reading comprehension achievements.
Masagus Sulaiman, Indawan Syahri, Dewi Risnawati Copyright (c) 2024 BLESS https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8543 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 The Measurement of Student’s Achievement by Applying Pre-Test & Post Test in Basic Listening https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8567
The main objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis between pre-test and post-test with the support of ICT media in deploying the test rather than a paper-based test. Infrastructure development and affordable price of computer appliances have supported the development of teaching material delivery in the digital era. The research covered 61 participants with 46 students from P1 and 17 students from M1; who are registered in the Basic Listening class. During the normal classroom activity, pre-test and post-test were conducted to get the data. The first data obtained from the pre-test consists of P1 and M1 classes in total numbers. 75.77 as the average score was obtained from the P1, with a maximum score of 93.75 in total. On the other hand, for the M1 class, the average score is 76.22, with a maximum score of 91.25. The conclusion of this study proves that the implementation of pre-tests is possible to continue in the future. The results supported by the application of ICT media in the test’s delivery supported more administrative documentation, which eases more time and efficiency than paper-based tests. The conclusion of this study proves that pre-testing is possible to continue in the future.
Theodore Alexander Atmaja Copyright (c) 2024 BLESS https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8567 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Students Difficulties’ Effects on Academic Reading https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8573
The purpose of this study was to determine the reading problems that affect students' academic achievement. Reading is one of the most common ways to acquire knowledge. Reading comprehension is a skill that can help students in learning process. In fact, many students in basic reading classes have difficulties with reading comprehension. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with 67 students from the morning and evening Basic Reading class of the English Language and Culture Study Program participating through purposive sampling. The data collected by administering the questionnaires were then analyzed to determine the types of problems that the students had in reading comprehension. The questionnaires were used to collect data, which was then examined descriptively to determine the types of reading comprehension challenges experienced by students. According to the findings, the most difficult reading tasks for students are distinguishing between main ideas and supporting details, determining the main idea between paragraphs, identifying the topic of texts from other cultures, relating topic and background knowledge, understanding vocabulary, and interpreting the text. Based on these findings, a variety of reading strategies should be implemented to identify and address these barriers to reading comprehension.
Udur Delima Sibatuara Copyright (c) 2024 BLESS https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8573 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Using Phonetic Transcription For Pronunciation Learning https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8576
The purpose of this study was to examine how phonetic transcriptions aid students in learning pronunciation. One effective strategy for helping students with their pronunciation is to use phonetic transcription. This can demonstrate the exact articulation and production of sounds in words or sentences. In this classroom research, the researcher provides pronunciation instruction and provides a phonetic transcription. The study was conducted during the odd semester of the 2023–2024 academic year. The P1 class from the first semester was selected to participate in the study. The findings indicated that, when pronunciation lessons first started, some students had trouble differentiating certain English language sounds and knowing how to use them in their pronunciation. They improve their learning after going through a learning cycle and are able to use dictionaries to independently check their pronunciation. Alternatively, they could continue their study habits until the test. The test's outcomes were far superior to those of the earlier exercises because the majority of the participants performed well on the oral exam. The students' ability to apply phonetic symbols to their pronunciation and their growing familiarity with them demonstrate a notable improvement in their pronunciation skills. In summary, phonetic transcription has the potential to improve students' pronunciation.
Vitha Ama Matuate Copyright (c) 2024 BLESS https://journal.widyadharma.ac.id/index.php/bless/article/view/8576 Wed, 31 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000
